The Cub Scouts of Pack 76, located in Mt. Laurel, NJ, is a dedicated group of boys that have already developed a sense of community engagement and willingness to assist those in need. Pack 76 has partnered with Legacy Treatment Services for several years as their charity of choice and recipient of items collected during their annual Scouting for Food Project.
The Cub Scouts, with supervision from their parents and troop leaders, provide grocery bags donated by a local Shop Rite grocery store to each home in the Parkway Section of Mt. Laurel. The homeowners then fill the bags with non-perishable items to help feed those in danger of suffering from hunger.
This year, the scouts matched last year’s total of collecting nearly 1,000 bags of food from homeowners in their troop area. The bags are loaded onto a box truck owned by Legacy, sorted, and then distributed to individuals and families in need throughout the area. Often times, when we think of philanthropy it is in terms of monetary donations by adults, but this outpouring of care by Cub Scouts for fellow citizens in their community highlights that a giving spirit starts in the heart…even at a young age.
