Step into the world of transformation and triumph as we share the stories of individuals whose lives have been profoundly changed through the unwavering support of Legacy Treatment Services.
Learn About John, a Former Children’s Home Consumer:
Twelve-year-old John M. was placed in Riley Cottage at the Legacy Treatment Services Children’s Home Campus. He was placed with us after constant attempts to run away from home in Camden as John had endured abuse, neglect, and faced significant trauma and behavioral challenges. In a heartfelt letter written years later, John shared, “I owe my life to the old Children’s Home and house parents Mr. Hagey and Mrs. Grunden… It was Mrs. Grunden who got me to open up. She hugged me with warmth I hadn’t previously known. She understood why I drug razors up and down my arms, why I hated adults. When I cried at Riley Cottage, it was the first time it didn’t involve someone hitting me.”
Through the support of Legacy and his Treatment Home parents, John began a path of healing. He is now married with three children of his own and makes it his life mission to help others.
Learn About Matt, our ECSS Consumer:
Our ECSS program supports adults who have been released from state psychiatric hospitals. Prior to his release from the hospital, the last time Matt had seen his son was a few years before, when his child was a toddler. However, even after his release, Matt still had to endure an additional delay of several months, due to the court system, before he could regain contact with his son. Matt worked diligently in his treatment programs with Legacy, all in hopes of seeing his son again. With his life changing progress, Matt is now able to regularly visit his child and is thriving.
Learn About Jamie, a Mary A. Dobbins Special Education School Student
Jamie came to Legacy’s Mary A. Dobbins School unable to read or write, while facing debilitating social anxiety. After two years of specialized education programs, therapies, and support at Dobbins, Jamie’s academic and social growth skyrocketed. Jamie is now preparing to go to college, loves to spend time with friends, passionately sings in front of an audience, and hopes to one day work in law enforcement to “help others”.
Learn About Ms. Myrtle, a Foster Care Parent, and her Children:
Legacy Treatment Home parents open their homes to at-risk youth who need a safe home. Ms. Myrtle has been a loving foster care parent to over 80 children throughout 22 years. Her children describe their experience with her:
“Without Ms. Myrtle’s unconditional love and support I would not be here. She has a special place in my heart that can never be replaced or filled by another. She is the true definition of what I call a mother. She is a strong, kind and gentle woman who can move mountains especially when it’s a mountain as stubborn as myself. She has made me into the person I am today, and I am eternally grateful for having her in my life. I love you, Mom.” – Damien
“Ms. Myrtle helped change my life. She doesn’t care what problems you had before she met you because once you’re with her she’ll help you solve them. She went above and beyond for me… I’m forever grateful for her.” – Emily
“I moved in with Ms. Myrtle at just nine years old. She is literally the foundation of my work ethic and roots to my hard work. I didn’t know what a “Thanksgiving” was until I moved in with Ms. Myrtle and man, they were the best mealtimes of my life! I’ll forever be thankful for you Ms. Myrtle and I’ll be sure to pass on all the knowledge you’ve given me to my little ones.” – Joel
