Under Program Supervisor Mike Watson, The HIVE at Pemberton Township High School is a cornerstone of student support, offering emotional support, substance use counseling, academic advisement, and a safe space for personal growth. Staffed by a Youth Development Specialist and a School Intervention Specialist, The HIVE helps students overcome challenges and build skills for future success.
The program’s impact is clear in success stories like that of a young artist who, despite mental health struggles, is now pursuing her dream of art school thanks to The HIVE’s encouragement. The program also addresses issues such as transitioning to a larger school, managing crises, and dealing with vaping and peer conflicts. Families are linked to various social service resources, such as the agency’s onsite food hub, providing non-perishable goods to feed families in need across our community.
Trips, which are not typically accessible to Pemberton High School students elsewhere, to places such as the Cape May County Zoo, Great Adventure, and the NJ Adventure Aquarium, offer unique recreational opportunities that many students from marginalized backgrounds would otherwise miss. These activities not only provide a break from routine but also increase engagement and foster a sense of community. The HIVE similarly supports students in preparing for life after high school by assisting with resumes, job searches, and college applications.
Daily counseling helps students develop coping skills and manage trauma. The program has positively influenced the school environment, earning praise from administrators and students alike.
Watson emphasizes the program’s philosophy: “Be involved, be engaged.” Looking ahead, The HIVE plans to expand its reach, introduce new initiatives, and foster greater engagement within the school. For many students, The HIVE is an essential part of their high school journey, providing the support they need to thrive.
On behalf of Legacy Treatment Services, we wish all of our Pemberton Township High School students and staff a successful start to the school year!
